AppMaker vs. Claude Code
The difference is not which AI is smarter. AppMaker's own agent currently runs on Anthropic's Claude models. The difference is the environment the AI works in: your own codebase, or a ready-made platform for business applications.
What Claude Code does well
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with your development tools, in the terminal, in IDEs such as VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app and in the browser.
- It works on any existing project, and Anthropic says it can read code in any language.
- It fits a git workflow: staging changes, writing commits, creating branches and pull requests, and running in CI.
- It is extensible with MCP servers, project instructions, skills, hooks, subagents and an SDK.
- The output is ordinary source code in your own repository, with no proprietary format.
Where Claude Code fits better
- Fully bespoke applications and complex custom architectures.
- Any technology stack, language or framework you choose.
- General software engineering: refactoring, migrations, tests, code review.
- Existing codebases that are not AppMaker projects.
Where AppMaker fits better
- Structured, data-driven business apps where the architecture is already decided.
- Built-in database, sign-in and roles, workflows, jobs, secrets and file storage, so there is less infrastructure to generate and maintain.
- An integrated experience: describe the app, see it running beside the chat, refine it.
- Visual control next to the AI: forms, data and code you can edit in Design mode.
- People who don't want to set up a development environment to get started.
Important differences
| AppMaker | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An AI-first builder and platform for business apps | A general-purpose agentic coding tool |
| Where AI works | Inside a fixed application structure: forms, data, server scripts | In your repository, with whatever structure it has |
| Infrastructure | Database, sign-in, roles, jobs and workflows are part of the platform | You choose and build the stack, with the agent's help |
| Running the app | Live in the browser while you build; export as a standalone Node.js app | Runs wherever your project runs; Claude Code doesn't host apps |
| Visual editing | Design mode for forms, data and code | Works in code, inside your editor or terminal |
| Maturity | Public beta, for evaluation and development | Generally available since May 2025 |
Which should you choose?
Choose Claude Code if you are a developer building custom software in a stack of your choice, or working on an existing codebase. Choose AppMaker if you want a business application such as a CRM, an approval workflow or an internal tool, and would rather the AI build on a ready-made foundation than generate one. The two aren't exclusive: an AppMaker export is a set of ordinary files.
